Bloodstone

Quartz var. Bloodstone (Heliotrope) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Mineral Specimen

Bloodstone

Crystal System

Trigonal (Hexagonal); habit is microcrystalline/cryptocrystalline (Massive)

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 with trace inclusions of Iron Oxide (Hematite)

Formation Process

Hydrothermal or Sedimentary; forms at low temperatures when silica-rich fluids permeate through rock cavities or volcanic fissures.

About This Crystal

An opaque, dark green chalcedony featuring red to brownish-red spots or streaks. It exhibits a dull to waxy luster on its naturally weathered surface, which can be polished to a vitreous shine. The surface shown displays a pitted, water-worn texture with earthy red oxidation.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Forest green with red jaspar/hematite inclusions. Streak: White. Cleavage: None. Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven. Specific Gravity: 2.58–2.64. Fluorescence: Generally none.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553. Birefringence: Up to 0.009. Pleochroism: None. Optical Effect: Opaque, showing no internal light play but distinct color mottling.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

India (notably the Deccan Traps), Australia, Brazil, and China; typically found in alluvial deposits or hydrothermal veins.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7. Toughness: High (due to cryptocrystalline structure). Stability: Stable under normal light and heat.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners if the stone has surface-reaching fractures or pits.

Rarity & Value

Common; value is determined by the balance and vividness of the red spots against the green background. Larger, more saturated pieces are preferred.

Special Characteristics

The red 'blood' spots are caused by inclusions of iron oxide (Hematite) or red jasper within the green chalcedony matrix.

Lore & History

Historically known as 'Heliotrope' (sun turner). In the Middle Ages, the red spots were believed to be the blood of Christ. Symbolically associated with vitality, strength, and protection; traditionally linked to the Root and Heart chakras.
