Shungite

Shungite (Amorphous Carbon) · Mineraloid / Decorative Stone

Shungite

Crystal System

Amorphous; occurs in massive, earthy, or stony habits; no internal crystal lattice

Mineral Group

Native Elements (Carbon Group)

Chemical Formula

C (Carbon with Fullerenes C60, C70)

Formation Process

Sedimentary/Metamorphic; thought to form from the metamorphosis of ancient Precambrian oil shale or biological mats in a marine environment

About This Crystal

Deep black to charcoal grey material with a metallic or sub-metallic luster. Type I (Elite) is vitreous/glassy, while Type II and III are more matte with greyish inclusions. This specimen shows a dull to semi-bright metallic luster with uneven, irregular surfaces.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Black; Streak: Black; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 1.8 - 2.0; Tenacity: Brittle; Highly conductive to electricity; Generally non-fluorescent

Optical Properties

Opaque; Non-refractive (amorphous); Sub-metallic to vitreous luster; No pleochroism or dispersion

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Karelia, Russia (Zazhoginsky mine); also found in smaller deposits in Austria, India, and Kazakhstan

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness: 3.5 - 4.0; Low toughness; Brittle and prone to scratching or chipping; Not recommended for high-wear jewelry

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth; avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals; store separately to prevent scratching from harder stones; may leave black residue on skin or fabric if unpolished

Rarity & Value

Common (Type II/III) to Rare (Elite Type I). Value is determined by carbon content; 'Elite Shungite' with 90%+ carbon is the most valuable and sold as glassy shards

Special Characteristics

Unique for containing natural Fullerenes (hollow carbon molecules); exceptionally high electrical conductivity for a non-metallic mineraloid

Lore & History

Historically used in Russia since the time of Peter the Great for water purification. In modern metaphysical practices, it is believed to provide EMF protection and grounding, associated with the Root Chakra; used in lore as a 'stone of rejuvenation' and 'miracle stone'.
