Kunzite

Spodumene var. Kunzite · Semi-Precious Gemstone

Kunzite

Crystal System

Monoclinic system, prismatic habit

Mineral Group

Silicates (Inosilicates)

Chemical Formula

LiAl(SiO3)2

Formation Process

Pegmatitic, forming in lithium-rich granitic pegmatites under high pressure and temperature conditions

About This Crystal

A translucent to transparent, pale pink to lilac colored gemstone with a vitreous luster, exhibiting distinct striations along its prismatic length and showing internal fractures and characteristic pleochroism.

Physical Characteristics

Light pink to violet body color, white streak, perfect prismatic cleavage in two directions at roughly 87 and 93 degrees, uneven to conchoidal fracture, specific gravity of approximately 3.14 to 3.20, brittle tenacity, and weak orange to red fluorescence under longwave UV light.

Optical Properties

Biaxial (+) with refractive indices of nalpha = 1.660 - 1.667, nbeta = 1.665 - 1.672, ngamma = 1.675 - 1.682; strong trichroism showing pink, purple, and clear or colorless depending on the viewing angle.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Afghanistan, Madagascar, Brazil, and the United States (California)

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7; high risk of cleavage makes it fragile and sensitive to sharp impacts; moderate wearability for jewelry with proper protective settings.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water using a soft brush; avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, harsh chemicals, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight which can cause the pink color to fade.

Rarity & Value

Uncommon to Rare depending on color saturation and clarity; value is determined by intense pink-to-purple hue, size, and absence of prominent inclusions; often heat-treated or irradiated to enhance color depth.

Special Characteristics

Strong trichroism, perfect cleavage planes which complicate cutting, and susceptibility to fading (spontaneous loss of color under UV radiation or sunlight over time).

Lore & History

Discovered in 1902 and named after George Frederick Kunz, chief gemologist at Tiffany & Co. Traditionally associated with the heart chakra, emotional healing, unconditional love, and inner peace in metaphysical belief systems.
