Jadeite Jade
Jadeite · Precious Gemstone / Ornamental Stone

Crystal System
Monoclinic; massive, microcrystalline aggregate habit
Mineral Group
Silicates, specifically Inosilicates (pyroxene group)
Chemical Formula
NaAlSi2O6
Formation Process
Metamorphic, occurring in serpentinite shear zones under high pressure and relatively low temperatures
About This Crystal
The specimen is a beaded strand featuring spherical beads of intense, vivid apple-to-emerald green color, polished to a high vitreous to waxy luster, displaying a translucent to semi-translucent body with subtle micro-granular texture typical of dense aggregate jadeite.
Physical Characteristics
Vivid green color with white mottled patches, white streak, cleavage is prismatic (though rarely seen in aggregates), fracture is splintery to uneven, specific gravity is approximately 3.30-3.38, tenacity is exceptionally tough due to interlocking microfibers, non-magnetic.
Optical Properties
Refractive index ranges from 1.654 to 1.667, doubly refractive (biaxial positive), pleochroism is generally weak to moderate in shades of green, aggregate structure causes a typical 'aggregate reaction' under polariscope.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Myanmar (Burma), Guatemala, Russia, Japan; forms in high-pressure, low-temperature metamorphic environments
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, exceptionally high toughness due to its interlocking fine-grained fibrous micro-structure, making it extremely resistant to breaking and very suitable for daily jewelry wear.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth; avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and steam cleaners, especially if the stone has been polymer-impregnated (B-jade). Store separately to prevent scratching softer stones.
Rarity & Value
Top-quality vivid green jadeite (Imperial Jade) is extremely rare and valuable, often commanding very high prices per carat. Treatments such as bleaching and polymer impregnation (B-jade) or dyeing (C-jade) are very common in commercial-grade materials.
Special Characteristics
Exceptional toughness exceeding that of quartz or diamond due to micro-crystalline interlocking texture; possesses a cool-to-the-touch feel and high density.
Lore & History
Historically revered in Chinese and Mesoamerican cultures as a stone of nobility, purity, and protection, often carved into intricate artifacts, weapons, and burial suits. In crystal healing, it is traditionally associated with the Heart Chakra, believed to attract good luck, wealth, and harmony, though these are traditional cultural beliefs rather than scientific claims.
