Bumblebee Jasper Egg
Calcite-Quartz-Pyrite Composite (Commercial name: Bumblebee Jasper) · Decorative Stone and Mineral Specimen

Crystal System
Trigonal (Calcite component)
Mineral Group
Carbonates and Silicates composite
Chemical Formula
CaCO3 (Calcite) with varying amounts of SiO2 (Quartz/Jasper), FeS2 (Pyrite), and sulfur compounds
Formation Process
Hydrothermal activity in volcanic environments, specifically fumaroles and hot springs where sulfur and carbonate minerals precipitate
About This Crystal
The specimen is a smooth, polished egg-shaped stone featuring striking bands and patches of bright yellow, opaque white, and dark gray or black matrix. It has a waxy to vitreous luster when polished, with distinct color zoning reminiscent of a bumblebee pattern.
Physical Characteristics
Colors include vibrant yellow, white, and black/gray. Streak is white. It has no cleavage visible in its tumbled form. Fracture is uneven to conchoidal. Specific gravity is approximately 2.6 to 2.9. Tenacity is brittle.
Optical Properties
Opaque to translucent in thinner sections. Birefringence is high due to the dominant calcite content. No significant pleochroism or special optical phenomena.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Mount Papandayan, Java, Indonesia
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness is roughly 3.5 to 5 due to the softness of the calcite and sulfur components. It has poor durability for daily wear jewelry and is sensitive to scratching and acids.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and prolonged exposure to water or acids due to the reactive nature of calcite and potential toxic sulfur/arsenic content in the matrix.
Rarity & Value
Uncommon to rare, as it is sourced from a single active volcanic region in Indonesia. Value depends on the vibrancy of the yellow coloration and pattern definition.
Special Characteristics
Contains natural sulfur and potentially arsenic-bearing minerals (like realgar or orpiment), meaning rough specimens require careful handling and washing hands after contact.
Lore & History
A relatively modern discovery on the crystal market. In metaphysical lore, it is associated with the solar plexus and sacral chakras, believed to promote high energy, joy, transformation, and overcoming fear. Note: These are traditional beliefs and not scientifically proven.
