Ruby in Fuchsite
Muscovite var. Fuchsite with Corundum var. Ruby · Collector Mineral / Semi-Precious Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Monoclinic (Fuchsite) and Trigonal (Ruby); typically found in massive, tumbled, or granular habits.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Mica Group - Fuchsite); Oxides (Hematite Group - Ruby)
Chemical Formula
K(Al,Cr)2(AlSi3O10)(OH)2 [Fuchsite] + Al2O3:Cr [Ruby]
Formation Process
Metamorphic; forms during regional metamorphism of rocks rich in aluminum and chromium under moderate to high pressure and temperature.
About This Crystal
An opaque, light to emerald-green matrix of chrome-rich mica (fuchsite) containing distinct, embedded hexagonal or rounded crystals of red to purplish-red ruby. Often features a ring of pale blue or white kyanite around the rubies. Luster is pearly to vitreous.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Green with red spots; Streak: White; Cleavage: Perfect basal (fuchsite); Fracture: Uneven; Specific Gravity: ~2.8-3.0; Fluoresence: Rubies glow bright red under long-wave UV light.
Optical Properties
Biaxial (fuchsite); Uniaxial negative (ruby). Refractive index varies significantly between the green mica matrix (~1.56) and the hard ruby inclusions (~1.76).
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Mainly Southern India (Mysore); also found in Brazil, Pakistan, and Russia. Occurs in metamorphic rocks.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 2-3 (Fuchsite matrix) and 9 (Ruby inclusions). This extreme difference makes the stone difficult to polish and prone to scratching in the green areas.
Care & Maintenance
Clean only with warm soapy water and a soft cloth; avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Store separately from harder gemstones to prevent scratching of the soft mica matrix.
Rarity & Value
Relatively common; value is determined by the brightness of the green color and the size/definition of the ruby inclusions. Often confused with Ruby in Zoisite (Anyolite).
Special Characteristics
UV Fluorescence: The rubies typically show a strong red glow. Distinguishable from Ruby in Zoisite by the mica's pearly luster and the frequent presence of a blue kyanite 'halo' around the rubies.
Lore & History
Historically used as a decorative stone. In metaphysical lore, it is believed to combine the heart-centered energy of Fuchsite with the vitality of Ruby to aid in emotional healing and physical strength.
