Wishing Stone / Banded Quartzite Pebble
Quartzite var. Banded Pebble · Mineral Specimen / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Trigonal (microcrystalline/massive quartz matrix)
Mineral Group
Silicates
Chemical Formula
SiO2
Formation Process
Sedimentary deposition of quartz-rich sand, followed by regional metamorphism into quartzite, with subsequent hydrothermal quartz veining and mechanical weathering/water-tumbling.
About This Crystal
A water-worn, smooth pebble of greyish-green stone featuring a prominent, contrasting white quartz band running completely around its circumference. The surface is matte to slightly waxy due to natural tumbling.
Physical Characteristics
Grey-green body with a white quartz inclusion band; white streak; no distinct cleavage; conchoidal to uneven fracture; specific gravity around 2.65; brittle tenacity; insoluble in acids.
Optical Properties
Vitreous to dull luster on the polished/tumbled surface; translucent to opaque; uniaxial positive birefringence within the quartz components.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Found worldwide in riverbeds and glacial deposits; commonly referred to as a wishing stone when encircled by a continuous band.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness of 7 for the quartz components; high durability and resistance to wear, making it exceptionally well-suited for handling and carrying.
Care & Maintenance
Washable with warm soapy water; highly durable against scratches and unaffected by normal sunlight or household chemicals.
Rarity & Value
Common, though specimens with a perfectly continuous, centered band (wishing stones) are sought after by collectors; low commercial value, priced mainly as novelty or spiritual specimens.
Special Characteristics
Features a striking single mineral vein inclusion running through a host rock, naturally shaped into a smooth pebble by water action.
Lore & History
Often called wishing stones or luck stones in folklore. Traditionally believed that making a wish and tracing the continuous white band with a finger brings good fortune. Associated with centering energy and intention, purely within metaphysical belief systems.
