Fire Quartz

Quartz var. Hematoid Quartz · Semi-Precious Gemstone and Decorative Stone

Fire Quartz

Crystal System

Trigonal, typically polished into spherical bead habit

Mineral Group

Silicates (Subgroup: Tectosilicate)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 with inclusions of Fe2O3 (Hematite)

Formation Process

Hydrothermal and pegmatitic environments where iron-rich fluids interact with growing quartz crystals, causing hematite to precipitate within or on the quartz.

About This Crystal

The specimen is a beaded bracelet consisting of polished spherical beads displaying warm reddish-orange to brownish-red hues. The beads exhibit translucent to opaque transparency with a vitreous luster, showcasing internal cloudiness, natural hematite inclusions, and color zoning ranging from clear quartz areas to concentrated rusty red patches.

Physical Characteristics

Color ranges from translucent white to fiery orange-red and brown due to hematite inclusions. Streak is white. Conchoidal fracture with no distinct cleavage. Specific gravity is approximately 2.65. Brittle tenacity, highly polished surface.

Optical Properties

Singly or doubly refractive with a refractive index of 1.544 to 1.553. Birefringence is weak (0.009). Exhibits no strong pleochroism or special optical effects like chatoyancy, though internal reflections from flaky hematite inclusions create a shimmering or glittering appearance (aventurescence).

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Madagascar, Brazil, South Africa, and the United States

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness of 7, making it durable for daily wear as jewelry. Good resistance to scratching, though care should be taken with impact due to brittle tenacity.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and prolonged direct sunlight to maintain the vibrancy of the inclusions.

Rarity & Value

Common to Uncommon. Value is determined by the vividness of the red coloration, clarity of the quartz matrix, size of the beads, and lack of artificial dyeing. Generally affordable and widely accessible.

Special Characteristics

Features striking red to brownish-red hematite inclusions trapped inside the quartz matrix, sometimes presenting as phantom layers, flecks, or localized staining.

Lore & History

Often referred to as Fire Quartz, Hematoid Quartz, or Harlequin Quartz in metaphysical communities. Traditionally associated with grounding, balancing the root and sacral chakras, transforming negative energy into universal love, and promoting vitality and focus. These are traditional beliefs and not scientific claims.
