Flower Agate

Chalcedony var. Agate (with Opaque Inclusions) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Flower Agate

Crystal System

Trigonal (Microcrystalline); This specimen is cut into a polished hexagonal tower/obelisk with a prismatic habit.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate group, Quartz family)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with Ferruginous and Clay mineral inclusions

Formation Process

Hydrothermal/Sedimentary; formed by the precipitation of silica from groundwater into cavities of volcanic rock, where plumose inclusions of minerals like hematite create the flower-like patterns.

About This Crystal

Translucent to semi-opaque chalcedony with creamy, pink, or white opaque 'flower' or plume-like inclusions. Features a vitreous to waxy luster and a polished, smooth surface.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Pale grayish-pink base with white/peach inclusions. Streak: White. Cleavage: None. Fracture: Conchoidal. Specific Gravity: 2.58–2.64. Fluorescence: Often inert but can show weak yellow-green under UV.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.530–1.543. Birefringence: Up to 0.004. Optical Character: Uniaxial positive. Pleochroism: None.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Primarily Madagascar; typically found in volcanic rock cavities or sedimentary deposits.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7. Good toughness and durability; suitable for most jewelry and decorative uses.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners if the stone has internal fractures. Store away from harder stones like Sapphire or Diamond.

Rarity & Value

Common; value is determined by the clarity of the 'shards' or 'flowers' and the transparency of the host agate. Generally affordable ($10-$50 for standard towers).

Special Characteristics

Features 'Plume' or 'Flowering' inclusions that resemble cherry blossoms or seeds growing in the stone; occasionally contains small geode pockets of druzy quartz.

Lore & History

Discovered relatively recently in Madagascar (late 2010s). In modern crystal lore, it is associated with the Heart and Base chakras, symbolizing personal growth, 'blooming,' and reaching one's potential.
