About This Crystal
Carved into a polished skull shape, this specimen displays a characteristic grey-to-black background peppered with shimmering, silvery-blue or bronze chatoyant flashes caused by the Schiller effect from microperthite feldspar intergrowths. The texture is coarse-grained with a high vitreous polish.
Physical Characteristics
Color ranges from dark grey, blue-grey to black with striking silver, blue, or copper chatoyant feldspar crystals. Streak is white. Fracture is uneven to conchoidal. Specific gravity is approximately 2.65 to 2.75. Tenacity is brittle. Cleavage is distinct in two directions for the feldspar components.
Optical Properties
Biaxial with variable refractive indices depending on the mineral constituents (typically around 1.52 to 1.57). Exhibits strong labradorescence or chatoyancy known as the Schiller effect due to the lamellar intergrowths of alkali feldspar and plagioclase.
