About This Crystal

This is a polished tumbling stone showing characteristic mottled patches of soft lilac, purple, and milky white. It is opaque to translucent with a vitreous to pearly luster typical of micas, presenting a smooth, rounded surface from tumbling.

Physical Characteristics

Color ranges from pink, lilac, and violet to greyish-white. Streak is white. Perfect basal cleavage in one direction, yielding thin, flexible flakes. Fracture is uneven. Specific gravity is approximately 2.8 to 2.9. Tenacity is sectile and flexible in thin layers.

Optical Properties

Biaxial (-) with refractive indices around nα = 1.530 - 1.548, nβ = 1.560 - 1.585, nγ = 1.565 - 1.590. Shows weak pleochroism in shades of pink and colorless.

Found globally with notable deposits in Brazil, Madagascar, the United States (California), Russia, and Canada. Typically forms in lithium-rich granitic pegmatites.

Mohs hardness of 2.5 to 4. Low durability due to perfect cleavage and soft nature; poor wearability for rings or daily-wear jewelry without protective settings.

Care & Maintenance

Clean gently with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight which can cause fading. Store separately from harder stones to prevent scratching.
