Unakite Jasper
Epidotized Granite · Decorative Stone and Mineral Specimen

Crystal System
Varies by component minerals (Feldspar is Monoclinic/Triclinic, Quartz is Trigonal, Epidote is Monoclinic). Habit is massive or granular.
Mineral Group
Composite rock consisting of Silicates (Tectosilicates and Inosilicates)
Chemical Formula
KAlSi3O8 + Ca2(Al,Fe)3(SiO4)3(OH) + SiO2
Formation Process
Metasomatic alteration where hydrothermal fluids alter granitic rocks, transforming plagioclase feldspar into epidote.
About This Crystal
The specimen is intricately carved into the shape of a bird or animal skull, featuring a polished, glossy surface. It exhibits a distinctive mottled and speckled appearance with an intergrowth of pink orthoclase feldspar, green epidote, and clear to grey quartz.
Physical Characteristics
Colors include pink, peach, olive green, and grey. Streak is white. Fracture is uneven to conchoidal. Specific gravity is roughly 2.85 to 3.20. Tenacity is brittle. Luster is vitreous to sub-vitreous when polished.
Optical Properties
Birefringent and doubly refractive due to the composite nature of its constituent minerals (quartz, feldspar, and epidote). Opaque to translucent in thin edges.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Originally discovered in the Unaka Mountains of North Carolina, USA. Also found in South Africa, Brazil, China, and Sierra Leone.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness ranges between 6 and 7, reflecting the hardness of its constituent quartz and feldspar minerals. Moderate to good durability, suitable for carvings and certain jewelry types.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, ultrasonic cleaners, and prolonged exposure to direct, intense sunlight which may dull the polished surface over time.
Rarity & Value
Common. Widely available in the gemstone and mineral market, primarily valued based on the quality of the carving, size, and the vividness of the pink and green contrast. Usually moderately priced.
Special Characteristics
Features a striking natural patchwork pattern created by the combination of pink feldspar and green epidote, making each carved specimen entirely unique in its patterning and color distribution.
Lore & History
Named after the Unaka Mountains where it was first found. In metaphysical practices, Unakite is often considered a stone of vision, balancing emotional emotions with spirituality, and is traditionally associated with the heart chakra.
