Sugilite
Sugilite · Semi-Precious Gemstone and Collector Mineral

Crystal System
Hexagonal, typically found in a massive or compact habit
Mineral Group
Silicates, specifically Cyclosilicates
Chemical Formula
KNa2(Fe,Mn,Al)2Li3Si12O30
Formation Process
Metamorphic, typically formed in manganese-rich lithologies undergoing metasomatism associated with intrusive igneous rocks
About This Crystal
An opaque, polished bead displaying a striking combination of vibrant purple and lavender hues intermixed with dark bluish-violet patches and intricate dark matrix veining.
Physical Characteristics
Color ranges from pinkish-purple to deep bluish-purple with black or dark brown matrix inclusions. Streak is pale pinkish-white. Conchoidal to uneven fracture. Specific gravity is approximately 2.74 to 2.80. Tenacity is brittle.
Optical Properties
Biaxial (-) with refractive indices around 1.607 to 1.610. Generally opaque in gem-grade cabochons, lacking significant pleochroism or other optical phenomena.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Wessels Mine in the Kalahari Manganese Field of South Africa, and Iwagi Island in Japan
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5. Moderate durability suitable for most jewelry if set carefully, though it can be scratched by quartz and harder minerals.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, ultrasonic cleaners, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or extreme heat.
Rarity & Value
Rare. High-grade gel sugilite is extremely rare and valuable, while matrix-heavy or lighter purple opaque material is more accessible. Prices scale significantly with intense royal purple color saturation.
Special Characteristics
Notable for its intense, electric purple coloration derived from trace amounts of manganese, often combined with rich black or brown manganese oxide matrix patterns.
Lore & History
Discovered in 1944 by Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi. In modern metaphysical practices, sugilite is widely regarded as a stone of spiritual love, wisdom, and protection, often associated with the third eye and crown chakras.
