Moss Agate

Chalcedony var. Moss Agate (Cryptocrystalline Quartz) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Moss Agate

Crystal System

Trigonal/Hexagonal crystal system; usually occurs in massive, microcrystalline, or botryoidal habits.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate subgroup)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 + (Fe, Mg, Mn, Cr) inclusions

Formation Process

Hydrothermal/Sedimentary process: Silica-rich groundwater percolates through volcanic rock cavities, precipitating chalcedony while incorporating manganese or iron oxides that form the dendritic 'moss' patterns.

About This Crystal

Translucent to semi-opaque white or colorless chalcedony containing dark green, moss-like inclusions. The specimen is carved into a star shape with a vitreous to waxy luster and dendritic, branch-like green patterns.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Green inclusions in white/colorless base. Streak: White. Cleavage: None. Fracture: Conchoidal. Specific Gravity: 2.58-2.64. Typically non-fluorescent, though the chalcedony base may show faint green under UV.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.530-1.540. Birefringence: Up to 0.004. Lacks pleochroism and dispersion; exhibits aggregate polarization due to its microcrystalline structure.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Notable sources include India, Brazil, Uruguay, USA (Montana and Wyoming), and Central Europe. Found in volcanic cavities and sedimentary rock pockets.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5 to 7. Highly durable with no cleavage, making it excellent for jewelry and carved decorative objects.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. While stable, avoid prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals and extreme heat. Generally safe for ultrasonic cleaners.

Rarity & Value

Common. Value is determined by the complexity and beauty of the 'moss' patterns rather than carat weight. Treatments like dyeing are possible but uncommon for this specific variety.

Special Characteristics

Dendritic inclusions created by manganese or iron oxides that resemble organic plant life, though they are entirely mineral in origin.

Lore & History

Historically used as an amulet for agriculture and garden growth. Culturally symbolized as a stone of new beginnings and abundance. In traditional lore, it is associated with the Heart Chakra and grounding energy.
