Formation Process
Forms primarily through hydrothermal processes or igneous crystallization in pegmatites, as well as low-temperature metamorphic conditions. Natural citrine gets its yellow to brownish color from trace amounts of iron, whereas much commercial citrine is produced by heat-treating purple amethyst.

Body color ranges from pale yellow to deep amber-brown. Streak is white. Cleavage is absent, displaying a distinct conchoidal fracture. Specific gravity is approximately 2.65. Tenacity is brittle. It exhibits piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties and is generally inert under UV light.

Singly or doubly refractive depending on the viewing angle, specifically uniaxial positive with a refractive index of 1.544 to 1.553 and a low birefringence of 0.009. Pleochroism is usually very weak or absent.
