Tiger's Eye
Pseudomorph of Quartz after Crocidolite · Semi-Precious Gemstone

Crystal System
Trigonal crystal system; typically found in massive, fibrous habits
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicate group)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 with inclusions of Iron Oxide (mainly Limonite/Goethite)
Formation Process
Metamorphic; it forms through a process called pseudomorphism where silica-rich fluids replace fibrous crocidolite (asbestos) while maintaining the original fibrous structure.
About This Crystal
An opaque, chatoyant gemstone with a silky luster. It displays alternating bands of golden yellow, honey brown, and deep chocolate colors. The structure is characterized by parallel fibrous inclusions that create a 'moving' light effect.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Gold, yellow, brown; Streak: Yellow-brown; Fracture: Conchoidal to splintery; Specific Gravity: 2.64-2.71; Luster: Silky; Diaphaneity: Opaque.
Optical Properties
Displays strong chatoyancy (cat's eye effect) caused by the reflection of light off the internal fibrous structure. Refractive Index: 1.544-1.553. Uniaxial positive.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
South Africa (Northern Cape), Australia, Myanmar, India, and Namibia
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 6.5 - 7.0. It is a tough and durable stone suitable for all forms of jewelry, though it can be sensitive to strong acids.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh household chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners which might penetrate the fibrous structure if there are surface-reaching fractures.
Rarity & Value
Very common; valued by the sharpness of its chatoyancy and the richness of its golden-brown banding. Prices are generally affordable for standard specimens.
Special Characteristics
Distinctive chatoyancy; when the iron content is less oxidized, it can appear blue (known as Hawk's Eye). Red varieties (Bull's Eye) are usually the result of gentle heat treatment.
Lore & History
Historically used as a protective amulet against the 'evil eye' and curses. In modern crystal lore, it is believed to represent courage, integrity, and the balancing of the solar plexus chakra.
