Blue Calcite with Hematite Inclusions

Calcite var. Blue Calcite (Calcium Carbonate) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Mineral Specimen

Blue Calcite with Hematite Inclusions

Crystal System

Trigonal; typically found in massive, microcrystalline, or rhombohedral habits

Mineral Group

Carbonates (Calcite group)

Chemical Formula

CaCO3 with Fe2O3 (Hematite) and various trace elements

Formation Process

Sedimentary precipitation or metamorphic recrystallization of calcium-rich solutions

About This Crystal

A sky-blue to gray-blue translucent stone with a waxy to vitreous luster. This specimen features reddish-brown earthy inclusions, likely hematite or iron oxides, coating portions of the surface and entering internal fractures.

Physical Characteristics

Blue body color with white streak, perfect rhombohedral cleavage (though often obscure in massive form), sub-conchoidal to uneven fracture, specific gravity of 2.71, often shows white or light blue fluorescence under longwave UV.

Optical Properties

Uniaxial negative; refractive index of 1.486–1.658; very high birefringence (though not easily visible in massive rough specimens)

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Madagascar and Mexico; typically found in sedimentary limestone or metamorphic environments

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness 3; very soft and brittle; susceptible to scratching by copper or steel; low toughness due to perfect cleavage planes

Care & Maintenance

Avoid all acids (even vinegar) which will cause effervescence; clean only with warm soapy water; do not use ultrasonic cleaners; store away from harder minerals like quartz

Rarity & Value

Relatively common; value is based on the intensity of the blue color and size; usually inexpensive and sold by weight or as decorative pocket stones

Special Characteristics

Waxy 'soapy' feel to the touch; reacts (fizzes) instantly when in contact with cold dilute hydrochloric acid; color is often attributed to light scattering or trace impurities

Lore & History

Historically used as a source of lime and in early metallurgy. In modern crystal lore, it is believed to be a stone of emotional soothing, communication, and relaxation, often associated with the Throat Chakra.
