Rose Quartz

Quartz var. Rose Quartz · Semi-Precious Gemstone and Mineral Specimen

Rose Quartz

Crystal System

Trigonal, massive or anhedral habit with no well-defined crystal faces visible on this specimen.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate subgroup)

Chemical Formula

SiO2

Formation Process

Igneous and pegmatitic formation, crystallizing from silica-rich magmatic fluids at high temperatures and pressures.

About This Crystal

An unpolished, translucent to semi-translucent raw chunk of pink quartz showing a pale pink body color, vitreous to greasy luster, and typical massive habit with internal fracturing.

Physical Characteristics

Pale pink color, white streak, conchoidal fracture, lack of true cleavage, specific gravity of approximately 2.65, brittle tenacity, and generally inert to weak fluorescence under UV light.

Optical Properties

Singly or doubly refractive with a low birefringence of 0.009, uniaxial positive optical character, and refractive index ranging from 1.544 to 1.553.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Madagascar, Brazil, South Africa, and the USA; typically found in pegmatites and hydrothermal veins.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness of 7, fair to poor toughness due to internal fractures, stable under normal conditions, but can fade or crack with prolonged high heat or direct sunlight.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush; avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and prolonged direct sunlight to prevent color fading.

Rarity & Value

Common, widely available, with very affordable pricing for raw specimens; enhancements are rare since the natural color is abundant.

Special Characteristics

May exhibit faint asterism (star effect) when cut into cabochons due to microscopic dumortierite or fibrous inclusion needles, though this raw piece shows a cloudy massive texture.

Lore & History

Associated historically with love, emotional healing, and the heart chakra in metaphysical traditions, though these are cultural beliefs rather than scientific claims.
