Rose Quartz

Quartz var. Rose Quartz · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Rose Quartz

Crystal System

Trigonal; typically occurs in massive crystalline forms rather than distinct crystal faces (macrocrystalline quartz)

Mineral Group

Silicates; Tectosilicate subgroup

Chemical Formula

SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with trace amounts of titanium, iron, or manganese, and microscopic inclusions of dumortierite for color

Formation Process

Igneous/Pegmatitic origin; crystallizes from cooling magma in massive form within pegmatite veins at relatively high temperatures

About This Crystal

Translucent dusty-pink to lavender-pink specimen carved into a crescent moon. It exhibits a vitreous to slightly waxy luster and a characteristic cloudy or hazy appearance due to microscopic fibers of a pink borosilicate mineral.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Pink; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.65; Tenacity: Brittle; Fluorescence: Weak purple-red under UV in some specimens

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544-1.553; Birefringence: +0.009; Doubly refractive; may exhibit asterism (star effect) if oriented and polished as a cabochon containing rutilated inclusions

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Madagascar, Brazil (Minas Gerais), South Africa, India, and USA (South Dakota); forms in granitic pegmatites

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 7; excellent durability for jewelry, though massive forms can have internal fractures known as wings

Care & Maintenance

Safe to clean with warm soapy water; avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight as intense UV can cause the pink color to fade over time

Rarity & Value

Very Common; inexpensive; value is determined by color intensity and transparency; rarely treated, though some may be dyed or irradiated

Special Characteristics

Tyndall scattering contributes to the slightly blueish-pink hazy appearance; polished pieces often display a soft glow and internal veining

Lore & History

Historically used in ancient Egyptian and Roman civilizations for talismans; traditionally known as the Stone of Universal Love, associated with the heart chakra and emotional healing
