White Jade (or Serpentine/Soapstone Carving)

Nephrite var. White Nephrite (Tremolite-Actinolite solid solution series) · Decorative Stone / Carved Mineral Specimen

White Jade (or Serpentine/Soapstone Carving)

Crystal System

Monoclinic; typically exhibits a dense, microcrystalline, or fine-grained massive habit consisting of intertwined fibrous crystal aggregates.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Subgroup: Inosilicates - Amphibole group)

Chemical Formula

Ca2(Mg,Fe)5Si8O22(OH)2

Formation Process

Metamorphic formation process, specifically through metasomatism (contact or regional metamorphism) where hydrothermal fluids interact with dolomite or limestone rocks at high temperatures and pressures.

About This Crystal

The specimen is a skillfully carved small figurine of a meditating Buddha with fine detail on the hair curls and robes. It has a smooth, creamy off-white to pale ivory color with an opaque transparency and a waxy to greasy luster typical of dense microcrystalline nephrite jade.

Physical Characteristics

Body color is creamy white to pale yellowish-white with a white streak. It is a massive aggregate with no distinct cleavage planes, breaking with an uneven to splintery fracture. Specific gravity ranges from 2.90 to 3.03. It has extreme toughness due to its interlocking fibrous structure, rendering it remarkably difficult to break.

Optical Properties

Biaxial negative with refractive indices typically around 1.606 to 1.632. Birefringence is weak to moderate (around 0.027). It shows no significant pleochroism or special optical phenomena in this solid white opaque variety.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Notable sources for white nephrite include Xinjiang (Khotan region) in China, British Columbia in Canada, Russia, and the United States. Forms in metamorphic environments.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness is approximately 6.0 to 6.5. Despite a moderate hardness, nephrite possesses exceptional toughness due to its tightly interwoven felted crystal micro-structure, making it extremely durable and resistant to fracturing, highly suitable for intricate carvings and wear.

Care & Maintenance

Care is straightforward. It can be cleaned safely using warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, long exposure to strong acids, and extreme thermal shock. It does not fade in sunlight.

Rarity & Value

Considered uncommon to rare depending on the purity and specific geographic origin (such as prized Khotan white jade from China). Value is determined by carving craftsmanship, translucency, freedom from flaws, and material purity. Prices range widely from moderate to high for antique or master-carved pieces.

Special Characteristics

Renowned for its exceptional toughness and felted fibrous microstructure rather than optical phenomenological effects. It has a smooth, warm tactile feel when handled.

Lore & History

White jade holds profound historical significance in Chinese culture, where it has been mined and carved for thousands of years as a symbol of purity, nobility, moral integrity, and immortality. In traditional crystal healing practices, it is believed to calm the mind, release negative thoughts, and promote wisdom and peace. These are traditional cultural and spiritual beliefs rather than scientifically proven properties.
