Red Jasper

Chalcedony var. Jasper (Red) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Red Jasper

Crystal System

Trigonal symmetry; typically occurs in massive, microcrystalline aggregates without visible crystal faces

Mineral Group

Silicates (Subgroup: Tectosilicates)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with Fe2O3 (Hematite) inclusions

Formation Process

Sedimentary or Hydrothermal; forms when silica-rich fluids permeate porous rocks or volcanic ash, incorporating iron oxides during crystallization

About This Crystal

An opaque, microcrystalline variety of quartz exhibiting a brick-red to deep terracotta color. The specimen shown is a tumbled stone with a smooth surface, vitreous to waxy luster, and subtle darker mottling or banding due to varying hematite concentrations.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Red; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.58–2.91; Fluorescence: Typically inert/none; Tenacity: Brittle but very tough due to aggregate structure.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553; Birefringence: None (opaque); Pleochroism: None; Optical Character: Aggregate (usually behaves as isotropic due to opacity).

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Found worldwide; notable sources include India, Brazil, South Africa, USA (Oregon, Idaho), and Australia

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7; High durability and toughness; suitable for all jewelry types and daily wear.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Resistant to most chemicals and sunlight, but avoid harsh acids like hydrofluoric acid. Safe for ultrasonic cleaners.

Rarity & Value

Common; very affordable. Value is determined by color intensity and the absence of distracting fractures. Unenhanced; rarely treated.

Special Characteristics

Opaque nature distinguishes it from carnelian; the red color is specifically caused by high concentrations of dispersed hematite particles within the silica matrix.

Lore & History

Historically known as the 'Stone of Endurance' and used by Ancient Egyptians in amulets to provide protection. In traditional lore, it is associated with the Root Chakra and believed to promote grounding, stability, and physical strength.
