Trolleite in Quartz

Crystal System

Trigonal (Quartz) / Monoclinic (Trolleite inclusions); usually found in massive or granular habit

Mineral Group

Silicates (Quartz) and Phosphates (Trolleite/Lazulite/Scorzalite)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 (Quartz) + Al4(PO4)3(OH)3 (Trolleite)

Formation Process

Hydrothermal and Metamorphic; formed under high pressure in phosphate-rich environments within granitic pegmatites.

About This Crystal

A translucent to opaque rock-forming mineral combination featuring a milky white or greyish quartz matrix infused with blue, teal, or greenish-blue inclusions. Luster is vitreous to waxy.

Physical Characteristics

Color: White/Grey with blue-green patches. Streak: White. Cleavage: None (Quartz) to poor. Fracture: Conchoidal to splintery. Specific Gravity: 2.65 - 3.10. Fluorescence: Generally none.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544-1.553. Birefringence: 0.009. Pleochroism: Weak to moderate in the blue inclusion areas. Doubly refractive.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Minas Gerais, Brazil; also found in Sweden and California, USA. Typically occurs in granite pegmatites.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 5.5 to 8.5 (varies significantly between the soft phosphate inclusions and hard quartz matrix); Toughness: Fair.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals. Store separately to prevent scratching softer inclusions.

Rarity & Value

Uncommon; valued for its unique color patterns and high-quality polished forms. Prices vary based on the saturation of the blue-green inclusions.

Special Characteristics

Displays a unique 'watercolor' blending of blues and greys. May contain inclusions of related phosphates like Lazulite and Scorzalite.

Lore & History

Historically a rare find in the 19th century, it is now popular in modern lapidary work. Metaphysically associated with the Throat and Third Eye chakras, believed to aid in manifestation and mental clarity.
