Rose Quartz

Quartz var. Rose Quartz · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Rose Quartz

Crystal System

Trigonal (Hexagonal); usually found in massive form, rarely as discrete crystals

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate subgroup; Quartz group)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 with trace inclusions of fibrous dumortierite, manganese, or titanium

Formation Process

Igneous/Hydrothermal; typically forms in the core zone of granitic pegmatites and hydrothermal veins at high temperatures

About This Crystal

A translucent to cloudy pink variety of quartz. It exhibits a vitreous to greasy luster and a hazy transparency due to microscopic fibrous inclusions. The color ranges from very pale, almost white pink to deep rose-red.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Pink; Streak: White; Cleavage: None (poor); Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.65; Fluorescence: Usually weak purple or inert; Transparency: Translucent to semi-opaque.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544-1.553; Birefringence: 0.009 (uniaxial positive); Pleochroism: Weak; may show asterism (star effect) when cut as cabochons due to rutile inclusions.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Brazil (Minas Gerais), Madagascar, South Africa, Namibia, and USA (South Dakota)

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 7; Toughness: Good; highly durable for jewelry use but lack of cleavage makes it resistant to chipping.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water; avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight as the pink color can fade (photo-sensitive). Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners if internal fractures are present.

Rarity & Value

Common; very affordable. Value is determined by color intensity (saturation), transparency, and the presence of rare asterism. Larger specimens are readily available.

Special Characteristics

Known for its cloudy appearance caused by microscopic inclusions; can occasionally exhibit a six-rayed star (asterism) when oriented and cut correctly.

Lore & History

Historically used in talismans in ancient Egypt, Rome, and Greece. Traditionally known as the 'Stone of Unconditional Love' and associated with the Heart Chakra. Believed in lore to promote emotional healing, peace, and compassion.
