Desert Rose
Gypsum var. Desert Rose (Selenite) · Mineral Specimen / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Monoclinic; displays a rosette habit consisting of radial clusters of bladed crystals resembling rose petals
Mineral Group
Sulfates (Hydrous sulfates)
Chemical Formula
CaSO4·2H2O (Calcium Sulfate Dihydrate) often containing SiO2 (Sand) inclusions
Formation Process
Sedimentary/Evaporite; forms in arid sandy conditions through the evaporation of salt-rich water basin or groundwater, incorporating sand grains during crystallization
About This Crystal
A globular cluster of flat, bladed crystals arranged like petals. Appearance is earthy and matte due to embedded sand, with colors ranging from tan to reddish-brown or cream. Opaque to translucent at thin edges.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Sandy tan/buff; Streak: White; Cleavage: Perfect in one direction (often obscured by sand); Fracture: Uneven; SG: 2.3–2.4; Fluorescence: Sometimes shows pale yellow or blue under UV light
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.520–1.530; Biaxial (+); low birefringence. Generally lacks secondary optical phenomena due to heavy inclusions.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Sahara Desert (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia), Chihuahua Desert (Mexico), and arid regions of the Southwestern USA
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness 1.5–2.0 (extremely soft, can be scratched by a fingernail). Brittle and fragile; 'petals' can easily snap off.
Care & Maintenance
Avoid all water as gypsum is slightly soluble and the sand matrix can crumble. Clean only with a soft, dry brush. Keep away from heat and direct sunlight to prevent dehydration (calcination).
Rarity & Value
Common; widely available and affordable. Value is based on the symmetry of the 'flower' shape and the size of the specimen.
Special Characteristics
Unique bladed habit incorporating environmental sand; the inclusion of sand grains provides the characteristic 'desert' texture and color.
Lore & History
Historically used as a decorative curiosity from the desert. In metaphysical traditions, it is associated with the crown chakra and believed to represent mental clarity and the dissolution of self-imposed barriers.
