Shungite

Shungite (Non-crystalline carbonaceous mineraloid) · Mineral Specimen / Decorative Stone

Shungite

Crystal System

Amorphous (Non-crystalline). Habit is typically massive, matte, or sub-metallic rocks; Elite/Noble variety is glassy with conchoidal fracture.

Mineral Group

Native Elements (Carbon-rich mineraloid)

Chemical Formula

C (Carbon, typically 30-98%) with traces of Fullerenes (C60, C70) and Silicates

Formation Process

Sedimentary/Metamorphic. Formed from the metamorphosis of ancient organic sediments (precambrian algae/plankton) under high pressure and temperature.

About This Crystal

An opaque, black, non-crystalline mineraloid. Low-grade shungite is matte or dull grey-black, while 'Elite' or 'Noble' shungite has a bright sub-metallic to vitreous luster with a sleek, coal-like appearance and deep black color.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Black to dark grey; Streak: Black; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 1.8 - 2.0; Fluorescence: None. Highly conductive to electricity.

Optical Properties

Opaque (does not transmit light). Luster ranges from earthy/dull to sub-metallic or vitreous in high-carbon specimens. No birefringence or pleochroism due to amorphous structure.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Karelia region of Russia (Shunga village); typically found in Precambrian sedimentary-volcanic sequences.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 3.5 - 4.0. Relatively soft and brittle; can be scratched by harder stones or metal. Low toughness; prone to chipping.

Care & Maintenance

Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners. Clean with soft cloth and warm soapy water. Dry thoroughly. Carbon may rub off onto skin/clothing for lower grade specimens.

Rarity & Value

Common (Standard grade) to Uncommon (Elite/Noble grade). Value is determined by carbon content; 'Elite' shungite with >90% carbon is much more expensive.

Special Characteristics

Natural electrical conductivity (uncommon for non-metallic rocks). Contains natural fullerenes (spherical carbon molecules).

Lore & History

Historically used in Russia since the time of Peter the Great for water purification. Metaphysically associated with grounding, protection from EMF (electromagnetic frequencies), and purification of the Root Chakra.
