About This Crystal

The specimen is a small, irregular rough rock fragment featuring a characteristic yellowish-green to pistachio-green color with a fine-grained, crystalline texture. It is opaque with a sub-vitreous to resinous luster and exhibits a rough, uneven surface typical of a broken fragment.

Physical Characteristics

Color ranges from pistachio-green, yellowish-green to dark green or blackish-green. Streak is uncolored or greyish-white. Cleavage is perfect in one direction. Fracture is uneven to splintery. Specific gravity is approximately 3.3 to 3.5. Tenacity is brittle.

Optical Properties

Biaxial (-) with high refractive indices ranging from 1.715 to 1.797. Exhibits strong pleochroism in shades of green, yellow-green, and brown.

Found globally with notable deposits in Austria, Pakistan, Norway, Mexico, and the USA (Alaska). Typically forms in hydrothermal veins and low-grade regional metamorphic rocks.

Mohs hardness of 6 to 7. Toughness is fair to poor due to perfect cleavage. Not ideal for everyday high-wear jewelry unless securely protected in settings.

Clean gently with warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, ultrasonic cleaners, and sudden temperature shocks. Store separately from harder gemstones to prevent scratching.
