Pink Mangano Calcite
Manganocalcite (Manganoan Calcite) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Collector Mineral

Crystal System
Trigonal; typically occurs in massive, granular, or stalactitic forms rather than distinct crystals when used for carvings.
Mineral Group
Carbonates (Calcite Group)
Chemical Formula
(Ca,Mn)CO3
Formation Process
Hydrothermal or sedimentary; forms through the precipitation of calcium carbonate in environments enriched with manganese.
About This Crystal
A soft, pastel pink mineral with a waxy to vitreous luster. This specimen is carved into a heart shape, showing a translucent to opaque body with characteristic white 'cloud-like' or banded calcite inclusions.
Physical Characteristics
Color is pale pink to rosy pink with a white streak. It features perfect rhombohedral cleavage (though obscured by carving). Specific gravity is 2.71 to 2.85. Most notably, it often exhibits strong bright pink fluorescence under UV light.
Optical Properties
Uniaxial negative; Refractive Index of 1.486–1.658; high birefringence (0.172). It does not show pleochroism but is known for its soft, even glow when polished.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Peru (notably the Pachapaqui District), Bulgaria, and Mexico; found in hydrothermal veins and sedimentary environments.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness of 3; very soft and brittle. Not recommended for high-wear jewelry like rings; best suited for pendants or decorative display.
Care & Maintenance
Avoid all acids (including vinegar) as they will dissolve the stone. Clean only with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Store separately from harder stones like quartz to prevent scratching.
Rarity & Value
Relatively common but higher manganese content (deeper pink) increases value. Often affordable, though large, intensely colored, or fluorescent specimens command higher prices.
Special Characteristics
Strong neon pink fluorescence under short-wave and long-wave UV light due to the presence of manganese. It often exhibits white banding or 'phantom' layers.
Lore & History
Historically used as a decorative stone. In modern crystal healing, it is often called the 'Stone of Peace' or 'Heart Stone,' associated with the Heart Chakra and believed to promote emotional healing and self-love.
