Shungite

Shungite (Non-crystalline carbonaceous mineraloid) · Mineral Specimen / Decorative Stone / Metaphysical Stone

Shungite

Crystal System

Amorphous (Non-crystalline); lacks a defined crystal system and typically occurs in massive or tumbled form

Mineral Group

Native Element (Carbon-rich mineraloid)

Chemical Formula

C (Carbon, typically 30-98%) with traces of silicates and iron

Formation Process

Precambrian-age biogenic sedimentary formation; metamorphosed coal-like carbonaceous matter formed from ancient algae and bacteria

About This Crystal

A dense, matte-to-submetallic black material. The specimen shown is a polished 'tumbled' stone, appearing opaque black with a vitreous to earthy luster. It may show small greyish veins of pyrite or quartz.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Deep black to charcoal grey; Streak: Black; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 1.8 - 2.0; Tenacity: Brittle; Fluorescence: None.

Optical Properties

Opaque; Refractive Index: N/A (Opaque); Luster ranges from dull/matte to metallic depending on the carbon content (Elite vs. Regular).

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Karelia, Russia (specifically the Shunga village area); also reported in limited amounts in Congo and Austria

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 3.5 - 4.0; Toughness: Low/Brittle; Low durability for jewelry, prone to scratching and may leave a black residue if not fully sealed.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth; avoid ultrasonic cleaners or harsh chemicals. Can be brittle, so store separately. Avoid prolonged water soaking if it contains pyrite inclusions.

Rarity & Value

Common (Regular Shungite) to Rare (Elite/Noble Shungite which is silvery/glassy). Value is generally low for small tumbled pieces but increases for large carvings or high-carbon Elite varieties.

Special Characteristics

Notable for conducting electricity due to high carbon content; unique molecular structure contains 'fullerenes' (C60 carbon molecules).

Lore & History

Historically used as a water purifier in Russia since the time of Peter the Great. In metaphysical lore, it is believed to provide EMF protection and grounding. Associated with the Root Chakra.
