Cryptocrystalline Quartz var. Jasper / Chalcedony · Decorative Stone and Mineral Specimen

Shiva Lingam Stone

Crystal System

Trigonal, massive to microcrystalline habit, tumbled and polished to an oval shape

Mineral Group

Silicates

Chemical Formula

SiO2

Formation Process

Sedimentary deposition followed by hydrothermal activity and metamorphic alteration, shaped by river currents over long periods

About This Crystal

An egg-shaped (ovoid) tumbled stone with a smooth, matte to slightly waxy finish. It features distinct natural markings, notably a brownish-yellow iron-oxide band or cap wrapping around a grayish-tan cryptocrystalline quartz body, giving it the iconic sacred phallic shape characteristic of Shiva Lingam stones.

Physical Characteristics

Colors include grayish-tan and brownish-yellow. Streak is white. Cleavage is absent due to microcrystalline structure. Fracture is conchoidal to uneven. Specific gravity is approximately 2.65. Tenacity is brittle.

Optical Properties

Refractive index ranges from 1.544 to 1.553. Doubly refractive with a low birefringence. Generally opaque to translucent at thin edges. Luster is dull to waxy on polished surfaces.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Narmada River in Mandhata, Madhya Pradesh, India

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7. Good durability and toughness suitable for handling and basic jewelry use, comparable to quartz.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight if dyes are present (though authentic Shiva Lingam stones are naturally colored).

Rarity & Value

Uncommon, as they are exclusively sourced from a single river in India and collected only when the river recedes annually. Value depends on size, symmetry, and distinct markings.

Special Characteristics

Naturally tumbled and shaped by river currents into a sacred egg form, featuring striking and symbolic natural mineral banding and iron-oxide staining.

Lore & History

Highly revered in Hinduism representing Lord Shiva and the cosmic egg (Brahmanda). Used in meditation and spiritual practices to balance male and female energies, activate the Kundalini energy, and promote inner transformation. These are traditional spiritual beliefs and not scientifically proven claims.
