Amethyst

Quartz var. Amethyst · Semi-Precious Gemstone

Amethyst

Crystal System

Trigonal (Hexagonal); typically occurs in prismatic or druzy habits, though this specimen is artificially cut and polished into a double-point wand shape.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with trace amounts of iron (Fe3+)

Formation Process

Hydrothermal formation at low to moderate temperatures in cavities of volcanic rocks (geodes) or within igneous pegmatites.

About This Crystal

Deep purple to violet coloration with visible color zoning. The specimen is translucent to transparent with a vitreous (glass-like) luster. It has been shaped into a polished hexagonal pillar with a pointed termination.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Violet to dark purple; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.65; Fluorescence: Usually inert but can show weak greenish-blue under UV.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553; Birefringence: 0.009 (Uniaxial positive); Weak pleochroism between purple and reddish-purple.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Major sources include Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, and Zambia. Commonly found in volcanic geodes and pegmatites.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 7; Good toughness with no cleavage, making it highly durable for all types of jewelry.

Care & Maintenance

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight as colors may fade. Clean with warm soapy water; safe for ultrasonic cleaning unless heavily included.

Rarity & Value

Common to Uncommon (High-quality dark purple material is more prized). Value is determined by color saturation and clarity. Heat treatment is common to produce Citrine.

Special Characteristics

Displays distinct color zoning; iron impurities and natural radiation from surrounding rocks create the signature purple hue.

Lore & History

Ancient Greeks believed it prevented intoxication (the name comes from 'amethystos', meaning 'not drunk'). Historically associated with the Crown Chakra and considered a stone of protection and spiritual clarity.
