Chlorite Phantom Quartz

Quartz (var. Rock Crystal) with inclusions of the Chlorite Group · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Mineral Specimen

Chlorite Phantom Quartz

Crystal System

Trigonal; typically hexaganol prisms with pyramidal terminations; this specimen is a tumbled/polished freeform habit.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate for Quartz; Phyllosilicate for Chlorite inclusions)

Chemical Formula

Host: SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide); Inclusions: (Mg,Fe)3(Si,Al)4O10(OH)2·(Mg,Fe)3(OH)6

Formation Process

Hydrothermal; the chlorite minerals deposit on the surface of a quartz crystal during a growth pause, and are later overgrown by continued quartz crystallization, creating the 'phantom' effect.

About This Crystal

A polished, translucent to transparent clear quartz stone containing dense, mossy green to dark grey inclusions of chlorite. The inclusions appear as a fuzzy, internal cloud or 'phantom' layer that follows the original growth shape of the crystal.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Clear with green/grey inclusions; Streak: White; Cleavage: None (Indistinct); Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.65; Fluorescence: Usually inert.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553; Birefringence: 0.009; Optical Character: Uniaxial positive; Luster: Vitreous (glassy).

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Brazil, Madagascar, and the Himalayan mountains (Nepal/India); forms in alpine-type veins and pegmatites.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 7; Toughness: Good; Stability: Highly stable; resistant to most household chemicals and light fading.

Care & Maintenance

Safe to clean with warm soapy water and soft brush; ultrasonic and steam cleaning are generally safe unless internal fractures (veils) are significant.

Rarity & Value

Common to Uncommon; value increases based on the clarity of the 'phantom' shape and the vividness of the green chlorite. Tumbled stones are affordable, while sharp, terminated crystals are collectors' items.

Special Characteristics

Features internal 'phantom' growth layers; inclusions often resemble underwater moss or forest landscapes; exhibits piezoelectricity.

Lore & History

Historically used as a 'healing' stone; in crystal lore, it is believed to assist in grounding and connecting with nature. Associated with the Heart Chakra due to the green chlorite content.
