Rhodonite

Rhodonite (Manganese Silicate) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Ornamental Stone

Rhodonite

Crystal System

Triclinic; typically found in massive, granular, or compact habits rather than distinct crystals.

Mineral Group

Silicates; Chain silicate (Inosilicate) / Pyroxenoid group

Chemical Formula

(Mn,Fe,Mg,Ca)SiO3

Formation Process

Metamorphic or Hydrothermal; typically forms in manganese-rich metamorphic rocks or through hydrothermal replacement in ore deposits.

About This Crystal

An opaque pink to rose-red stone characterized by distinctive black dendritic inclusions or veins of manganese oxide. It features a vitreous to pearly luster and a smooth, waxy surface when polished.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Pink to brownish-red with black veins. Streak: White. Cleavage: Perfect in two directions. Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven. Specific Gravity: 3.5–3.7. Luminescence: Generally none, occasionally weak red.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.716–1.752. Birefringence: 0.010–0.015. Biaxial positive. Generally opaque to translucent in thin sections.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Russia (Ural Mountains), Australia (Broken Hill), Brazil, Peru, Madagascar, and USA (New Jersey).

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 5.5 to 6.5. Toughness: Brittle to fair. Suitable for cabochons and carvings but requires care in rings.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaning, and harsh chemicals (acids). Store separately to prevent scratching from harder stones like quartz.

Rarity & Value

Common globally but high-quality gem-grade specimens with deep saturation and minimal black veining are rarer and more valuable.

Special Characteristics

Distinctive black 'matrix' patterns caused by manganese oxidation. Occasionally exhibits chatoyancy in rare fibrous specimens.

Lore & History

Historically used in Russia as a protective stone and for decorative architecture (notably in the Kremlin). In metaphysical lore, it is known as the 'Stone of Compassion,' associated with the heart chakra and emotional healing.
