Pink Tourmaline
Tourmaline var. Rubellite (Elbaite) · Semi-Precious Gemstone

Crystal System
Trigonal; typically occurs as elongated prismatic crystals with vertical striations, often with a rounded triangular cross-section.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Cyclosilicate subgroup)
Chemical Formula
Na(Li,Al)3Al6(BO3)3Si6O18(OH)4
Formation Process
Igneous/Hydrothermal; primarily forms in granitic pegmatites and occasionally in metamorphic rocks like schist through hydrothermal fluid circulation and cooling.
About This Crystal
The specimen is a faceted, transparent, vivid pink gemstone with a vitreous luster. It displays excellent clarity with typical internal facet reflections. The color range for this variety spans from soft pastel pink to deep magenta.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Pink to deep red-pink; Streak: White; Cleavage: Indistinct/None; Fracture: Uneven to conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 3.06; Tenacity: Brittle; Fluorescence: Generally inert to weak pink/red under UV.
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.624–1.644; Birefringence: 0.018–0.040 (Doubly refractive); Pleochroism: Strong (Dark pink to light pink/near colorless); Dispersion: 0.017.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Notable sources include Brazil (Minas Gerais), Madagascar, Nigeria, Afghanistan, and the United States (California and Maine).
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 7–7.5; Toughness: Fair to Good; Stability: Stable to light, but sensitive to high heat and sudden temperature changes which may cause fracturing.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush; avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners due to potential liquid-filled inclusions. Store away from harder gems like sapphire or diamond. Protect from high heat.
Rarity & Value
Common to Uncommon; value is highly dependent on color saturation and 'cleanliness' (clarity). Rubellite-grade pinks are more valuable. Common treatments include irradiation and mild heating to improve color.
Special Characteristics
Strongly pleochroic and pyroelectric (develops an electrical charge when heated). Some specimens show chatoyancy (cat's eye) if cut en cabochon, though this specimen is faceted.
Lore & History
Historically confused with rubies for centuries (The 'Caesar's Ruby' in the Russian Crown Jewels was later identified as Rubellite). Symbolically associated with the heart chakra, compassion, and emotional healing in traditional lore.
