Epidote-rich Quartzite var. Dragon Blood · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Dragon Blood Jasper

Crystal System

Trigonal/Monoclinic; microcrystalline/cryptocrystalline aggregate without visible crystal faces in this tumbled form.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate/Nesosilicate mixture)

Formation Process

Metamorphic; specifically a greenstone or quartzite that has undergone hydrothermal alteration or regional metamorphism to integrate epidote and piemontite.

About This Crystal

An opaque, tumbled stone featuring a deep maroon or 'dried blood' red matrix interspersed with lighter pinkish-white and greyish patches. It exhibits a vitreous to earthy luster and a smooth, polished surface with chaotic, brecciated-looking patterns.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Deep red to pinkish-maroon; Streak: White to pale red; Cleavage: None (aggregate stone); Fracture: Conchoidal to granular; SG: 2.6–2.9; Non-fluorescent.

Optical Properties

Opaque; Refractive Index: approx 1.54 (Quartz base); No pleochroism or dispersion visible due to opacity.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Western Australia (notably the Turee Creek area) and South Africa.

Hardness & Durability

6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale; high durability and toughness making it excellent for jewelry and pocket stones.

Care & Maintenance

Safe to clean with warm soapy water. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners if cracks are present. Store separately from softer stones like calcite or flourite.

Rarity & Value

Common; Value is generally low ($1-$10 for tumbled pieces). Value depends on the aesthetic balance of red and green/grey colors.

Special Characteristics

Distinctive mottled or brecciated appearance caused by the mixture of minerals (red piemontite/hematite within a silicate matrix).

Lore & History
