Rose Quartz
Quartz var. Rose Quartz · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Trigonal; typically occurs in massive form without external crystal faces.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicate subgroup)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide with trace inclusions of dumortierite for color)
Formation Process
Igneous; forms from the cooling of silica-rich magma in pegmatites at high temperatures. Rare crystalline forms exist but the massive variety is most common.
About This Crystal
A translucent to nearly opaque spherical specimen with a soft, pale pink to milky white color. It exhibits a vitreous to greasy luster with visible internal fractures and cloudy inclusions characteristic of massive quartz.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Pale pink to milky; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.65; Fluorescence: Usually none, occasionally weak purple under LWUV.
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.544-1.553; Birefringence: 0.009; Uniaxial (+); occasionally shows asterism if inclusions are aligned rutile needles.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Notable sources include Brazil, Madagascar, South Africa, and the United States (South Dakota). Found in pegmatites and hydrothermal veins.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 7; Toughness: Good (britle but lacks cleavage); Stable for most jewelry use but can be heat sensitive.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners if heavily fractured. Store away from direct sunlight as intense UV exposure can cause some specimens to fade.
Rarity & Value
Common; generally affordable. Value is determined by color intensity, transparency, and size. Rarely treated, though some may be dyed.
Special Characteristics
Massive form lacks crystal faces. Some specimens exhibit a six-rayed star (asterism) when cut into spheres or cabochons due to tiny rutile inclusions.
Lore & History
Historically used in ancient Egypt and Rome for beads and seals. Traditionally associated with the Heart Chakra, it is symbolically regarded as a stone of unconditional love and emotional healing.
