Green Selenite (Dyed)
Gypsum var. Selenite · Mineral Specimen / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Monoclinic; typically forms in tabular or prismatic crystals, but frequently found as massive, fibrous 'Satin Spar.'
Mineral Group
Sulfates (Hydrous Calcium Sulfate)
Chemical Formula
CaSO4·2H2O
Formation Process
Sedimentary; forms through the evaporation of alkaline lake or sea water in arid environments, or through the hydration of anhydrite.
About This Crystal
A carved crescent moon made of fibrous Satin Spar gypsum. It displays a vibrant, artificially dyed green color with a vitreous to pearly luster. The specimen is translucent with a distinctive chatoyant, silky sheen across its surface.
Physical Characteristics
Color is artificially dyed green; white streak; perfect cleavage in one direction; splintery fracture; specific gravity of 2.3; generally non-fluorescent unless treatments react.
Optical Properties
Biaxial positive; refractive index of 1.520-1.530; exhibits strong chatoyancy (cat's eye effect) due to its parallel fibrous structure; low birefringence.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Major sources include Morocco and Mexico; typically found in evaporite environments and sedimentary basins.
Hardness & Durability
Very soft (Mohs hardness of 2); extremely fragile and easily scratched by a fingernail; poor toughness; water-soluble over time.
Care & Maintenance
Avoid all water exposure as it can dissolve or dull the surface; clean only with a soft, dry cloth; store away from sunlight to prevent dye fading; keep separate from harder minerals.
Rarity & Value
Very common and inexpensive; value is determined by the quality of the carving and the intensity of the dye; often industrially produced in large quantities.
Special Characteristics
Strong fibrous chatoyancy and 'satin' sheen; highly porous nature which allows it to readily accept chemical dyes like the green seen here.
Lore & History
Historically named after the Greek moon goddess 'Selene.' Modern metaphysical beliefs associate it with clarity, cleansing, and peace; dyed versions are often used to combine these traits with the color symbolism of the heart chakra (green).
