Shungite
Shungite (Non-crystalline carbonaceous mineraloid) · Mineral Specimen / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Amorphous; it lacks an internal crystalline structure. This specific specimen is carved into a pyramid habit.
Mineral Group
Native Element (unclassified carbon-rich mineraloid)
Chemical Formula
C (Carbon, typically 30-98%) with minor SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3
Formation Process
Sedimentary/Metamorphic; likely formed from the metamorphosis of Precambrian organic-rich sediments (algal blooms) approximately 2 billion years ago.
About This Crystal
An opaque, matte-to-submetallic charcoal black stone. This specimen is polished into a geometric pyramid. It exhibits a dull-to-waxy luster with characteristic fine grey or white micro-veins of quartzite or pyrite and light surface abrasions.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Deep black to charcoal grey. Streak: Black. Cleavage: None (conchoidal fracture). Specific Gravity: 1.8 - 2.0. Tenacity: Brittle. Notable for being electrically conductive.
Optical Properties
Opaque (not light-transmissive). Refractive index is inapplicable due to opacity and amorphous nature. Exhibits a metallic-to-dull luster.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Karelia, Russia (Zazhoginskoye deposit near Lake Onega)
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness: 3.5 - 4.0. Relatively soft and prone to scratching. High stability but can leave black residue if unpolished.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth; avoid ultrasonic cleaners or harsh chemicals. It is soft, so store separately from harder stones like quartz to prevent scratches.
Rarity & Value
Relatively common in lower carbon grades, but high-purity 'Noble Shungite' is rarer. Value factors include carbon percentage and polish quality. Often inexpensive in carved forms.
Special Characteristics
Electrical conductivity (unique for non-metallic rocks); contains fullerenes (spherical carbon molecules), which are rare in nature.
Lore & History
Historically used in Russia as a water purification agent since the time of Peter the Great. In modern metaphysical practices, it is associated with the Root Chakra and believed to provide protection against EMF radiation.
