Amber
Fossilized Tree Resin (Succinite) · Organic Gem

Crystal System
Amorphous
Mineral Group
Organic Mineraloid
Chemical Formula
C10H16O (Variable organic polymer)
Formation Process
Fossilization of tree resin through burial, loss of volatile organic compounds, and polymerization over millions of years
About This Crystal
Small, smooth, rounded, oval-shaped nugget with a warm honey-brown to golden color and a dark patch or inclusion. Exhibits a resinous to vitreous luster, warm touch, and translucent to transparent clarity.
Physical Characteristics
Golden-brown color with brownish streak, amorphous habit, no cleavage, conchoidal fracture, very low specific gravity around 1.05 to 1.10 (making it float in saltwater), brittle tenacity, and often exhibits strong blue fluorescence under UV light.
Optical Properties
Refractive index around 1.54, singly refractive, isotropic due to amorphous nature, weak or absent pleochroism, and occasionally displays internal stress patterns or preserved inclusions.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Baltic region (Poland, Russia, Lithuania), Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Myanmar
Hardness & Durability
2 to 2.5 on the Mohs scale, low toughness, highly sensitive to heat, organic solvents, alcohol, and perfumes, making it poorly suited for everyday ring wear.
Care & Maintenance
Clean gently with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Store separately to prevent scratching, away from direct sunlight, chemicals, and extreme heat.
Rarity & Value
Common to moderately rare depending on size, clarity, color, and the presence of rare biological inclusions like insects or plant matter. Valued for jewelry and carvings; generally affordable unless containing exceptional inclusions.
Special Characteristics
Famous for preserving ancient inclusions such as insects, flora, and air bubbles. Exhibits triboelectric properties (acquires a static electric charge when rubbed with wool).
Lore & History
Used since the Stone Age for amulets, ornaments, and trade along the historic Amber Road. Historically believed to draw out negative energy, promote vitality, and is traditionally associated with the Solar Plexus chakra in crystal lore.
