About This Crystal
The image shows five small, smooth, tumbled stones ranging from translucent white to pale golden-yellow. They have a waxy to vitreous luster, rounded irregular pebble shapes typical of tumbling, and a semi-translucent internal appearance with faint cloudiness.
Physical Characteristics
Color ranges from white to pale yellow. Streak is white. Perfect rhombohedral cleavage in three directions at 75-degree angles (though obscured by tumbling). Conchoidal to uneven fracture. Specific gravity is approximately 2.71. Brittle tenacity, and vigorously effervesces (fizzes) when exposed to dilute hydrochloric acid.
Optical Properties
Uniaxial negative with extremely strong double refraction (birefringence), which causes a strong double image when viewed through transparent crystalline specimens. Refractive index ranges from 1.486 to 1.658.

Mohs hardness of 3, making it very soft and easily scratched by a copper coin or knife. Poor durability for rings or bracelets due to softness and perfect cleavage, making it susceptible to scratching and breakage.
Care & Maintenance
Clean only with a soft damp cloth. Never use ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, or harsh chemical detergents. Avoid exposure to acids such as vinegar, lemon juice, or household cleaners, which will dissolve and etch the surface. Store separately to prevent scratching by harder stones.
Rarity & Value
Common. Calcite is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth. Tumbled stones of this type are very inexpensive, typically costing a few dollars for a small set, and generally do not undergo artificial enhancements aside from tumbling and polishing.
Special Characteristics
Strong double refraction (birefringence) in well-formed crystals, vigorous reaction to cold dilute acid, and frequent reactive fluorescence under ultraviolet (UV) light.
