Kambaba Jasper
Stromatolite (Fossilized Algae in Rhyolite matrix) · Decorative Stone / Semi-Precious Gemstone

Crystal System
Trigonal/Microcrystalline; usually occurs as massive, opaque rock sections with orbicular (circular) patterns.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicates); a variety of chalcedony/rhyolite.
Chemical Formula
SiO2 (Quartz) with inclusions of Pyroxene, Amphibole, and Feldspar
Formation Process
Formed through the fossilization of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) in a sedimentary process that later underwent silicification, often associated with volcanic rhyolite matrices.
About This Crystal
An opaque, earthy stone featuring dark green to black swirling patterns and distinct orbicular 'eyes.' The surface displays a vitreous to dull luster depending on the polish. Color zoning consists of deep forest greens, black, and occasional grey or tan specs.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Dark green with black orbicular inclusions. Streak: White. Cleavage: None. Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven. Specific Gravity: 2.6 - 2.9. Typically non-fluorescent under UV light.
Optical Properties
Opaque transparency; refractive index approx. 1.54 (aggregate). No pleochroism or dispersion. Features a 'crocodile skin' optical pattern due to its orbicular structure.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Primarily the Bongolava region of West-Central Madagascar. It is also found in South Africa.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness: 6.5 to 7. Highly durable with good toughness, making it excellent for jewelry and sphere carving. Resistant to most household scratches.
Care & Maintenance
Wash with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners which may penetrate micro-fissures. Store separately from softer stones to avoid scratching them.
Rarity & Value
Relatively common but unique to specific locales. Value is determined by the clarity and definition of the 'eyes' or orbicular patterns. Generally affordable as tumbled stones or slabs.
Special Characteristics
Orbicular (eye-like) structures representing fossilized stromatolites; often mistakenly called 'Crocodile Jasper' due to its reptilian appearance.
Lore & History
Commonly referred to as a 'Stone of Peace and Tranquility.' Historically significant as it contains remnants of some of the earliest life forms on Earth (cyanobacteria). Traditionally associated with the Heart and Base chakras in crystal healing circles.
