Rutilated Quartz
Quartz var. Rutilated Quartz · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Collector Mineral

Crystal System
Trigonal; inclusions are Tetragonal. Habit is massive or prismatic, but seen here as a tumbled/cabochon shape.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicates)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with TiO2 (Titanium Dioxide) inclusions
Formation Process
Hydrothermal; the Rutile needles grow at high temperatures before or during the crystallization of the surrounding quartz.
About This Crystal
Tumbled, translucent smoky-to-honey colored quartz containing dense, fine hair-like golden-brown needle inclusions (rutile). It displays a vitreous luster with some surface internal fractures.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Transparent brownish-gold; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.65; Fluorescence: Usually inert.
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.544-1.553; Double refraction; Inclusions exhibit high metallic luster; no significant pleochroism.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Brazil (Minas Gerais), Madagascar, and various Alpine regions. Forms in pegmatites and hydrothermal veins.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 7 (quartz), 6-6.5 (rutile); Toughness: Good; Stability: Very stable; suitable for all jewelry types.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water; safe for ultrasonic cleaners unless heavily fractured. Store separately to avoid scratching softer stones.
Rarity & Value
Common to Uncommon; value is determined by the density and aesthetic arrangement of the rutile needles ('Venus hair').
Special Characteristics
Rutilated inclusions are the primary feature; may occasionally show weak chatoyancy if needles are aligned and cut specifically.
Lore & History
Historically called 'Venus Hair Stone.' Traditionally used in crystal healing for 'illuminating the soul' and promoting spiritual growth.
