Rhodonite

Rhodonite (Manganese Silicate) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Mineral

Rhodonite

Crystal System

Triclinic; typically found in massive, granular, or compact habits rather than distinct crystals.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Inosilicates/Pyroxenoid Group)

Chemical Formula

(Mn,Fe,Mg,Ca)SiO3

Formation Process

Metamorphic; typically forms through the regional or contact metamorphism of manganese-rich sedimentary rocks or via hydrothermal replacement.

About This Crystal

The specimen is a polished sphere displaying a deep brownish-pink to dusky rose hue. It is opaque with a vitreous to waxy luster and features characteristic dark, dendritic inclusions of manganese oxides.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Pinkish-red to brownish-pink with black inclusions; Streak: White; Cleavage: Perfect in two directions (rarely visible in polished spheres); Fracture: Uneven to conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 3.57–3.76; Non-fluorescent.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.733–1.744; Birefringence: 0.011 to 0.016; Pleochroism: Weak (red-pink to yellow-red); Opaque in massive form as shown.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Notable sources include Russia (Ural Mountains), Australia (Broken Hill), Brazil, and the USA (New Jersey). Forms in manganese-rich metamorphic rocks.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 5.5–6.5; Toughness: Fair to good (in massive form); Stable under normal light but can be sensitive to strong acids.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth; avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals; store separately to prevent scratching from harder gems like quartz.

Rarity & Value

Common; Value is determined by the intensity of the pink color and the aesthetic pattern of the black manganese veins. Large, high-quality pink areas are more valuable.

Special Characteristics

Known for its distinctive black 'dendritic' or veined manganese oxide inclusions which create a 'landscape' or 'web' effect on the polished surface.

Lore & History

Historically used in Russia as a stone of mourning and as a decorative stone for imperial palaces. Traditionally associated with the Heart Chakra and believed to aid in emotional healing and forgiveness.
