Mookaite Jasper
Silicon Dioxide var. Mookaite Jasper · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Trigonal; typically occurs in massive, microcrystalline forms with no visible individual crystals
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicate), Quartz Group
Chemical Formula
SiO2 with trace iron hydroxides (Goethite) and iron oxides (Hematite)
Formation Process
Sedimentary/Hydrothermal; formed as a fossiliferous porcelanite where silica-rich fluids petrified Radiolarite (the skeletal remains of microscopic sea creatures) during the Cretaceous period
About This Crystal
An opaque, microcrystalline variety of chalcedony with a smooth, porcelain-like luster. It features a distinctive earthy palette of mustard yellow, brick red, and brownish-purples with possible greyish mottling.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Red, yellow, brown; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to splintery; Specific Gravity: 2.6-2.7; Tenacity: Brittle; Fluorescence: None usually reported
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.544-1.553; Birefringence: Low (often zero in aggregate form); Pleochroism: None; Luster: Vitreous to dull/waxy; Opaque
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Mooka Station near Gascoyne Junction, Western Australia
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 6.5 to 7.0; High durability and excellent wearability for jewelry due to lack of cleavage
Care & Maintenance
Safe to clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush; resistant to most household chemicals but should be kept away from hydrofluoric acid; stores safely with most other stones
Rarity & Value
Relatively common but geographically specific to Western Australia; value is based on color patterns and polish quality; generally very affordable
Special Characteristics
Known for its 'porcelanous' texture and the presence of microscopic Radiolarite fossil remains; often exhibits sharp color zoning and banding
Lore & History
Historically used as a power stone by Aboriginal Australians; traditionally associated with grounding, versatility, and connection to the Earth (Root and Solar Plexus chakras)
