Lapis Lazuli (Low Grade/Denim Lapis)
Lazurite-rich metamorphic rock composed of Lazurite, Calcite, Sodalite, and Pyrite · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Isometric/Cubic (Lazurite) but occurs as a Massive Metamorphic Rock; non-crystalline aggregate structure
Mineral Group
Silicates; Tectosilicate (Sodalite group)
Chemical Formula
(Na,Ca)8(AlSiO4)6(SO4,S,Cl)2 (Lazurite component), with CaCO3 (Calcite) and FeS2 (Pyrite) inclusions
Formation Process
Metamorphic; formed via contact metamorphism where hydrothermal fluids alter limestone or marble around igneous intrusions.
About This Crystal
An opaque, mottled blue and grey stone carved into a heart shape. It displays a 'Denim' appearance with streaks of deep royal blue (lazurite) interspersed with significant white/grey patches (calcite/sodalite). It has a vitreous to dull luster.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Mottled blue/grey; Streak: Light blue; Cleavage: None (massive); Fracture: Conchoidal/Uneven; Density: 2.7–2.9 g/cm3; Fluorescence: Calcite patches may glow pink/orange under LWUV.
Optical Properties
Opaque; Refractive Index: Approx. 1.50 (aggregate); No pleochroism or dispersion; Lacks the star or chatoyancy effects found in other gems.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Sar-e-Sang, Afghanistan (primary); also Lake Baikal, Russia; Chile; and Myanmar. Typically forms in contact metamorphism of limestones.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 5 to 5.5; Brittle toughness; Sensitive to high heat, pressure, and acids due to calcite content.
Care & Maintenance
Clean only with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Avoid contact with household acids (vinegar/lemon) and store away from harder stones like quartz.
Rarity & Value
Common (in this mottled quality). High-grade ultramarine lapis with pyrite inclusions is rare. Value is low for denim-grade, often treated with dyes to darken the pale patches.
Special Characteristics
Mottled 'denim' texture; presence of grey calcite veins; lacks the gold-colored pyrite flecks associated with higher-quality specimens.
Lore & History
Historically prized for over 6,000 years in Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt (used in Tutankhamun's mask). Metaphysically associated with the Throat and Third Eye chakras, believed to promote truth and wisdom.
