Yooperlite
Syenite clasts containing fluorescent Sodalite · Mineral Specimen / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Isometric (Sodalite) / Monoclinic (Feldspar matrix); Habit in this specimen is massive and carved.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicates)
Chemical Formula
Na8(Al6Si6O24)Cl2 (Sodalite) within a silicate rock matrix (Syenite: KAlSi3O8 – NaAlSi3O8)
Formation Process
Igneous. These are glacial till originating from alkaline igneous rocks (syenites) that were transported by glaciers.
About This Crystal
Appears as a mottled gray and black stone under normal light. In this carving, it shows a matte to waxy luster, opaque transparency, and a speckled salt-and-pepper appearance.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Gray, black, and white. Streak: White. Fracture: Uneven to conchoidal. Specific Gravity: 2.2-2.3. Fluorescence: Strong orange-yellow glow under Longwave UV (365nm).
Optical Properties
Under UV light, it exhibits intense fluorescent glow due to the presence of Sodalite. Otherwise, it is non-phenomenal and opaque with low refractive index (approx. 1.48 for Sodalite).
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA (specifically Lake Superior shores). Similar rocks are found in Canada.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness: 5.5 to 6. Brittle tenacity. Generally stable but can be scratched by harder materials like quartz or steel.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners which may damage the surface of the carving.
Rarity & Value
Relatively common in its specific region but geographically limited. Value is primarily based on the quality of fluorescent spots and the craftsmanship of the carving.
Special Characteristics
The defining feature is its 'hidden' fluorescence; it looks like an ordinary rock until exposed to 365nm UV light, where it glows brilliant orange.
Lore & History
Discovered/named by Erik Rintamaki in 2017. Historically, it is glacial debris. Metaphysically, it is associated with the Throat Chakra, believed to help with self-expression and truth.
