Rose Quartz
Quartz var. Rose Quartz · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Mineral Specimen

Crystal System
Trigonal; typically occurs in massive form, rarely as distinct crystals
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicate)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with trace amounts of Titanium, Iron, or Manganese
Formation Process
Igneous; forms through magmatic crystallization in late-stage hydrothermal veins and granite pegmatites
About This Crystal
Translucent to semi-opaque pink stone with a vitreous (glassy) luster. This specimen is a tumbled stone or 'pocket stone' showing a smooth, polished surface with internal fractures and a soft, uniform pink hue.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Pale pink to rose red; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.65; Fluorescence: Usually none, occasionally weak purple
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.544-1.553; Birefringence: 0.009 (Low); Uniaxial (+); occasional asterism (star effect) in high-quality cabochons
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Madagascar, Brazil (Minas Gerais), South Dakota (USA), India, and Namibia; often found in pegmatites
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 7; Toughness: Good (brittle but lacks cleavage); highly durable for most jewelry types
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush; avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners if many fractures are present. Should be kept out of direct, prolonged sunlight to prevent color fading.
Rarity & Value
Very Common; Value is determined by color intensity and transparency. Tumbled stones like this are very affordable. Usually untreated, though some may be dyed or irradiated.
Special Characteristics
Can exhibit 'Tyndall scattering' due to microscopic needle-like inclusions, which gives it its characteristic hazy pink appearance. High-quality specimens can show a 6-rayed star (asterism) when cut into cabochons.
Lore & History
Ancient Egyptians and Romans used it in face masks and seals. Traditionally known as the 'Stone of Unconditional Love,' it is associated with the Heart Chakra in modern crystal healing practices and used for emotional healing.
