Shungite
Non-crystalline Carbon (Shungite) · Mineraloid / Metamorphic Rock

Crystal System
Amorphous / Non-crystalline; typically found in massive or fragmental habits, occasionally displaying a sub-conchoidal fracture.
Mineral Group
Mineraloids (High-carbon rocks)
Chemical Formula
C (Elemental Carbon, typically 30% to 98% carbon content)
Formation Process
Metamorphic; formed from the metamorphosis of ancient biological remains (algae/bacteria) into carbon-rich deposits roughly 2 billion years ago.
About This Crystal
Dark black, coal-like appearance with a sub-metallic to vitreous luster. Opaque with a smooth, sometimes flaky surface and silvery-grey reflective patches. Shows distinct conchoidal fracture and a dense, carbonaceous texture.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Deep black to gunmetal grey; Streak: Black; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 1.8 to 2.0; Tenacity: Brittle; Fluorescence: None.
Optical Properties
Opaque; metallic to sub-metallic luster; no refractive index or birefringence due to its amorphous, opaque nature.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Karelia, Russia (Zazhoginsky mine near Lake Onega); found in ancient Precambrian sedimentary rocks.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness 3.5 to 4.0. Low durability; brittle and can be easily scratched or broken. Not recommended for high-wear jewelry.
Care & Maintenance
Gently clean with warm water and soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals. Store separately as it can mark lighter stones or be scratched by harder ones.
Rarity & Value
Relatively common in its low-carbon form, but 'Elite' or 'Noble' Shungite (98% carbon) is much rarer and more valuable. Valued for its unique carbon structure.
Special Characteristics
Contains fullerenes (spherical carbon molecules such as C60). Highly conductive to electricity. High carbon content gives it a signature silvery sheen in higher-grade specimens.
Lore & History
Historically used in Russia as a water purification agent since the time of Peter the Great. In modern lore, it is believed to shield against EMF radiation and ground energy, often associated with the Root Chakra.
