Singly refractive aggregate under polariscope, uniaxial positive micro-crystals, non-pleochroic, no major optical phenomena other than an attractive opaque polish

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Found worldwide, with notable deposits in India, Russia, Brazil, France, Germany, and the USA

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, exceptionally tough and durable due to its microcrystalline interlocking quartz structure, making it highly suitable for all types of jewelry without special precautions

Care & Maintenance

Low maintenance; clean safely with warm soapy water and a soft cloth, avoid harsh chemical acids like hydrofluoric acid, safe from normal sunlight and heat exposure

Rarity & Value

Common and widely accessible globally, inexpensive unless carved into intricate art objects or combined with rare minerals

Special Characteristics

Contains finely disseminated iron oxide inclusions (hematite or goethite) which impart the distinct opaque red coloration
