Peach Selenite
Gypsum var. Selenite · Mineral Specimen / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Monoclinic; typically forms tabular, bladed, or acicular crystals; commonly found in massive or fibrous habits
Mineral Group
Sulfates (Hydrated)
Chemical Formula
CaSO4·2H2O (Hydrous Calcium Sulfate) with trace Hematite/Oxides causing the peach hue
Formation Process
Sedimentary process through the evaporation of sulfate-rich saltwater or from hydrothermal solutions in volcanic environments
About This Crystal
A translucent, peach-to-orange-hued fibrous mineral. This specimen is a tumbled/polished piece showing a characteristic silky, pearly luster with internal chatoyancy and distinct white fibrous bands and small dark inclusions.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Peach/Orange; Streak: White; Cleavage: Perfect in one direction (micaceous); Fracture: Splintery; Specific Gravity: 2.3; Fluorescence: Often pale yellow or white under UV; Tenacity: Brittle
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.520–1.529; Birefringence: 0.009; Double refraction; displays a silky chatoyant 'eye' or 'flash' due to its fibrous structure
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Morocco (notably the Sahara region), Mexico, and Utah, USA; typically found in evaporite sedimentary environments and dried lake beds
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 2 (very soft, can be scratched by a fingernail); Poor durability; sensitive to water and heat; easily damaged by jewelry mountings
Care & Maintenance
Never soak in water as it can dissolve or lose luster; clean only with a soft dry cloth; store separately from harder stones to avoid scratches; avoid chemical cleaners and steam
Rarity & Value
Common; Value is generally low to moderate; primarily priced by size and 'flash' quality; usually untreated but sometimes dyed (though peach is a natural occurrence)
Special Characteristics
Strong fibrous chatoyancy (satin-spar effect); internal reflection that appears to move as the stone is rotated; occasional dark dendritic or carbonaceous inclusions
Lore & History
Historically named after the Greek word 'selene' (moon). Peach variety is traditionally associated with the Sacral Chakra; believed in lore to assist with emotional clearing, hidden transformations, and personal power. Not scientifically proven.
