Jasper (Red/Brown Variety)

Quartz var. Jasper · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Jasper (Red/Brown Variety)

Crystal System

Trigonal symmetry but occurs in microcrystalline/massive habit; no visible external crystals.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate subgroup; Chalcedony family)

Chemical Formula

SiO₂ (with inclusions of Iron Oxides/Hydroxides like Hematite or Goethite)

Formation Process

Typically sedimentary or hydrothermal; forms as silica-rich fluids permeate porous rock or volcanic ash, slowly precipitating microcrystalline quartz and trapping impurities.

About This Crystal

An opaque, microcrystalline variety of quartz. This specimen shows a dull to earthy luster with a reddish-brown body color, typical of high iron content. It features a fine-grained, massive structure with some white mineral crusting or weathering on the edges.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Reddish-brown; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 2.58–2.91; Fluorescence: Generally inert.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553; Birefringence: None (massive form); Pleochroism: None; Optical Character: Opaque.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Globally abundant, notably from India, USA (Oregon/Idaho), South Africa, and Brazil. Often found in sedimentary or volcanic environments.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7; Toughness: Very high due to microcrystalline aggregate structure; Stability: Excellent, resistant to most household chemicals and light.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh acid cleaners. Store separately from softer stones to avoid scratching them.

Rarity & Value

Common rarity. Value is generally low for rough specimens, determined by color patterns and polishability. Often used for lapidary work and cabochons.

Special Characteristics

The opacity is caused by high concentrations of iron oxide inclusions. It may exhibit different color zones or 'bands' if sliced.

Lore & History

Historically known as the 'supreme nurturer.' Used in ancient Egypt for protective amulets and by Native Americans for rain-bringing rituals. Traditionally associated with the Root Chakra and believed to provide grounding and stability.
